Why this town matters

Chichibu demonstrates what responsible anime-location travel can look like. The city itself identifies the area as the setting model for Anohana and related works, while the real destination also includes a major shrine, a centuries-old Kannon pilgrimage and lived-in shopping streets.

Works, people, history and culture

  • Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
  • The Anthem of the Heart and Her Blue Sky
  • The Chichibu 34 Kannon pilgrimage and Chichibu Night Festival

What to see

  • Chichibu Bridge and central locations identified by the official anime guide
  • Chichibu Shrine and Matsuri Kaikan
  • Banba shopping street
  • Hitsujiyama Park
  • Local pilgrimage temples

Food, onsen and local culture

Soba, local miso potatoes, sake and whisky are part of the wider basin’s food identity. Public baths and ryokan exist, but Chichibu is not primarily an onsen town.

Connect neighboring towns

Combine the official anime walk with the shrine and historic shopping streets. Longer trips can include Nagatoro or the western Saitama mountains.

Etiquette and safety

Check live transport and weather notices before departure. Historic sites, shrines and residential streets are shared community spaces: keep voices low, do not enter private property, and ask before photographing people. Do not recreate screenshots in roadways, block shop entrances, photograph schoolchildren, or treat private homes as attractions.
