Why this sequence works
Travel from Onomichi to Matsuyama through the Shimanami islands, with a realistic cycling pace, an island overnight, the Imabari connection and a ferry-aware backup plan.
The route is ordered to protect time for the places themselves. It avoids treating Onomichi, Matsuyama as interchangeable pins and keeps overnight decisions visible.
Day-by-day route
- Day 1: Explore Onomichi, collect or reserve the bicycle, confirm luggage forwarding and check the weather
- Days 2–3: Cycle the Shimanami Kaido at a realistic daily distance, using an island overnight instead of rushing to Imabari
- Day 4: Return the bicycle at the correct terminal, then continue from Imabari toward Matsuyama; verify the current train or bus connection
- Day 5: Matsuyama Castle, literary sites and Dogo Onsen, with ferry or non-cycling options checked separately for poor weather
What each stop contributes
Onomichi
Onomichi’s character comes from compression: a narrow strip between mountain and channel, crossed by rail, ferries and stairways. Temples and hillside homes look over a working maritime route, while writers and filmmakers used the same geography. The Shimanami Kaido begins here, but the old city deserves its own day before departure.

Matsuyama
Matsuyama’s literary identity is embedded in transport and public space. Natsume Soseki’s Botchan, Masaoka Shiki’s haiku legacy, the hilltop castle and Dogo’s bath culture can be connected without a car.
- Matsuyama Castle
- Dogo Onsen Honkan
- Shiki Memorial Museum
Transport checklist by stop
Use these access notes to choose the right base and identify connections that need a fresh timetable check.
- OnomichiJR Onomichi Station sits beside the old city and waterfront. Shin-Onomichi Station is on the Shinkansen line but several kilometers inland; use a bus or taxi rather than assuming the stations are adjacent.Local movement: The central waterfront is flat, but the defining temple routes use steep, uneven stairs. Leave large luggage near the station. Cyclists should reserve an appropriate bicycle and separate city walking from the full island route.
- MatsuyamaMatsuyama Airport has bus links to the city and Dogo. Rail and ferry routes connect Matsuyama with other parts of Shikoku and the Seto Inland Sea.Local movement: Iyotetsu trams link the castle area, central streets and Dogo. Walking plus tram travel covers the core route efficiently.
Where to stay
Onomichi: 2 days; 3–4 with a Shimanami overnight
Matsuyama: 2 days
Season and weather
Onomichi: Spring and autumn are best for slopes and cycling; summer heat is serious and typhoon weather can disrupt ferries and riding.
Matsuyama: Year-round; spring and autumn are best for the castle climb, while onsen works in cooler weather.
Reservations and luggage
Reserve limited-express seats, popular accommodation and rural experiences when required. Use luggage forwarding or station lockers when a transfer day includes walking or buses.
Fallback plan
Protect the final train or bus first. In severe weather, remove the most remote stop rather than compressing every visit. Keep one indoor museum, craft or food option for each base.
Before committing
Recheck every long-distance and rural connection with the responsible operator. Closures, reservations, festival traffic and weather can reshape the route. Prices and operating times are intentionally not frozen into this page.
